Journal Entries for Students (Word Documents) Student Learning Outcomes, Objectives, and Assessment Student Learning Outcomes for Your Syllabus (Brief) What's New in the 8th Edition? Course Management Integration The interactive online version can now be integrated with your course management system for ease of access and automated grading. Expanded Material on Motivation Based on new research, material on mindset, grit, and perseverance has been added to Chapter 1, Understanding Motivation. To compensate for the added material, some material in this chapter has been condensed. The section on attention and concentration has been moved to Chapter 7, Using Brain Science to Improve Study Skills. Career Material Updated All the statistics on income, education, jobs in demand, and career trends are updated based on the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Streamlined to Reduce Cost Material has been condensed and some has moved online at www.collegesuccess1.com . Based on responses to a faculty survey, the material on life stages has been removed from Chapter 8. These changes were made to leave room for newer and more relevant topics and to assure affordability for students. Update on Assessments The assessments have been updated to align with current research and contain new interactive features. The Do What You Are is renamed AchieveWORKS Personality. The MI Advantage assessment of multiple intelligences is renamed AchieveWORKS Intelligences. A new learning and productivity assessment based on current research has been added, AchieveWORKS Learning and Productivity. As a reminder, learning styles were deleted from the 7th and 8th editions since empirical scientific support for learning styles is lacking. Current research in neuroscience suggests that we learn best by using all the senses. Learning preference depends on what we are learning. See my blog which presents the research on this issue, "Are Learning Styles a Myth? If So, What's Next?" You can also download a Word Document of this topic on my blog. This change was made in the 7th edition and continues in the 8th Edition. Emphasis on Math Success Math is the most failed subject in college and it is the gateway to high paying scientific and technical careers. There is added emphasis on how to study math, taking notes in math courses, math anxiety and taking tests in math. New material on mindset and grit has been integrated into this section. There is also a new "Student Perspective on How to Study Math." Focus on Positive Psychology Concepts from positive psychology are used to help students:
