Summary of What's New and Brief Content

The interactive online version can now be integrated with your course management system for ease of access and automated grading.

Here is a summary of the new material in the 10th Edition and a list of topics for each chapter.

Chapter 1, Understanding Motivation, contains updated statistics on earnings and educational attainment. Chapter topics: value of a college education, mindset, grit, positive thinking, finding interest, avoiding multi-tasking, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, using rewards to change behavior, improving persistence.  

Chapter 2, Exploring Your Personality and Major includes the TruTalent Personality Assessment and yields results comparable to Myers-Briggs.  Chapter topics: choosing a major that matches your gifts and talents, understanding personality types (extravert, introvert, sensing, intuitive, thinking, feeling, judging, perceiving), personality and career choice, personality and preferred work environment, personality and decision-making, personality and time management, personality and learning strategies, other factors in choosing a major, find your passion.  

Chapter 3, Exploring Multiple Intelligences, Interests, and Values includes the TruTalent Multiple Intelligences assessment and a link to the Interest Profiler. Chapter topics: build on your strengths, using emotional intelligence in your personal life and career, exploring your interests (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, conventional), interests and lifestyle, using values to make important life decisions, steps in making a career decision, act on your values. 

Chapter 4, Planning Your Career and Education, includes the TruTalent Skills Assessment which helps students understand their work skills. Career trends have been updated for the next decade. Chapter topics: work skills for the 21st Century, career trends 2024-2030, how to research your career, planning your education, finding employment, overcoming obstacles to success. 

Chapter 5, Managing Time and Money, includes, "Technology and Time Management" and has an activity, "Are You Addicted to the Internet?" designed to help students increase awareness of how technology impacts their time management. Chapter topics: lifetime goals, the ABC's of time management, technology and time management, how to estimate study and work time, schedule your success, time management tricks, dealing with time bandits, dealing with procrastination, managing your money, budgeting, financial aid and scholarships, using priorities.  

Chapter 6, Improve Your Memory is based on the latest research in neuroscience. Chapter topics: improving your memory (short-term vs. long-term memory, minimizing forgetting), practical memory techniques based on brain science (positive thinking, developing an interest, seeing the big picture, meaningful organization, the magical number 7 theory, visualization, intent to remember, elaboration, distributing the practice, creating a basic background, using mnemonics and other memory tricks.)               

Chapter 7, Improve Your Study Skills, includes the TruTalent Learning and Productivity Assessment. Chapter topics: neuroscience and practical learning strategies (visual, audio, tactile, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory), applying memory strategies to learning (survey, question, read, recite, review, reflect), tips for online learners, how to be successful in math, create your success.   

Chapter 8, Taking Notes, Writing, and Speaking, has a new section, "Power Your Writing with Artificial Intelligence" including using AI for brainstorming, editing, and generating citations. Ethical use of AI is emphasized. Chapter topics: the importance of note taking, the college lecture, good listening techniques, handwritten notes and memory, tips for good note taking, note taking systems, taking notes in math, improving note taking efficiency, how to review your notes, power writing with AI (prepare, organize, write, edit, revise), writer's block, effective public speaking, being selective.  

Chapter 9, Test Taking, has no changes. Chapter topics: preparing for tests, test review tools, reviewing effectively, dealing with test anxiety, dealing with math anxiety, taking tests (true-false, multiple choice, matching, sentence completion, essay), what to do when the test is returned.        

Chapter 10, Communication and Relationships, has no changes. Chapter topics: understanding your personal communication style, communication for success, the language of responsibility, barriers to effective communication, dealing with conflict, friendships, roommates, relationships, turning failure into opportunity. 

Chapter 11, Thinking Critically and Creatively, has no changes.Chapter topics: fallacies in reasoning, critical thinking and the scientific method, cognitive biases, how to become a critical thinker, creative thinking techniques, using humor to deal with stress.

Chapter 12, Empower Yourself: Strategies for Success, is a new chapter focused on mental and physical well-being. Chapter topics include: discovering your character strengths; reflecting on your strengths from family, culture, and community; strategies for mental health; building resilience; managing stress; learning to relax; improving physical health; and finding help when needed. Note that the chapter on diversity in the previous edition has been deleted. Some diversity topics are included in this new chapter. The Instructor Manual with diversity material and classroom exercises is still available for those who have this topic in their student learning outcomes. 

Chapter 13, Thinking Positively about the Future, has a new focus on career satisfaction. Chapter topics: thinking positively about your career; finding meaning in your career; predictors of job satisfaction; optimism, hope, future-mindedness; visualizing success; successful beliefs; secrets to happiness; reflecting on life purpose; making positive changes in your life; and you are what you think.
