Features of the new 3rd Edition

Cultural Perspective

This textbook includes a Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultural perspective. It is based on the premise that students are more successful when they take pride in their culture. While the textbook is designed for Native students, all student who live in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands can benefit from increasing knowledge and appreciation of the culture of the people where they live. This new edition contains updated photos of Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands and students from these areas.

Textbook Cover Art

We are happy to announce that Nicole Arielle Maka’āhina’ālohilohi Jack has designed the new cover for the 3nd Edition. She was born and raised in Kapahulu on the island of O’ahu and graduated from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa with a degree in Pacific Islands Studies in 2017.

She states that "The cover art depicts Hokule'a sailing the seas, past islands and toward the mountains of our homeland. A theme for this work was malama or to care for our surroundings and for each other. The ripples of islands in the design intersect, just as our interactions with those around us forge bonds and connections. The wake of the Hokule'a's steering blade leaves a lasting change on the ocean behind her, as we all have the power to do with how we each choose to help shape the future. Hands cup our most precious resource--water. Be it fresh or salt, water is our livelihood and it's our collective responsibility to use both technologically adaptive strategies and Indigenous knowledge to protect and care for it. Hokule'a proved that a voyage around the globe using ancestral skills was possible, and her successful homecoming brought together people and ideas from throughout the world. The woven mountains she sails toward in the design showcase this idea, and underscore the notion that knowledge an connectivity gained from exploration can then be brought back home to weave a successful future for our communities."
